When it comes to expressing emotions the French are one of the most vociferous – gentile and aggressive! They are widely acknowledged as the romantics of Europe, so it is probably no surprise that the Language of Flowers is supposed to have started in France in the early 1800s. The idea was that bunches and arrangements conveyed secret messages between forbidden lovers.
Since its early years many have commented on the use of the Language of Flowers and indeed, the meanings of individual flowers – so goodness knows what sort mixed messages have been relayed as history has elapsed! Even today there is no definitive list of meanings and there are even instances were modern times have changed historic meanings.
